SKELEC Launches Competitive Tender for Landmark 50MW Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Project
Basseterre, Saint Kitts (March 30th, 2026) – The St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd (SKELEC) is pleased to announce the official launch of the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Basseterre Valley 50MW Solar PV and 30.5MW/30.5MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project, a transformative national initiative aimed at modernizing St. Kitts’ energy sector.
This tender launch follows formal Cabinet approval and concludes a rigorous 12-month due diligence process assessing the technical, financial, economic, and legal readiness of the project. Advisory support was provided by Castalia, ILF Consulting Engineers, GIDE, and Merchant Law, ensuring the project is prepared to meet global standards for renewable energy development.
Speaking on the next phase of the project, Mr. Clement Williams, General Manager of SKELEC, stated, “SKELEC remains committed to advancing the Federation’s energy transition in a transparent and structured manner. The launch of the Request for Proposals marks another important milestone in bringing this transformational renewable energy project to fruition. This initiative will significantly strengthen our energy security, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and accelerate the path towards us achieving our 2030 renewable energy targets per St. Kitts and Nevis’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for CO2 emissions reduction.”
Providing remarks following a stakeholder briefing, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Hon. Konris Maynard, stated, “This is a defining step in the transformation of the energy future of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is historic, not only in scale, but in what it represents: a decisive shift toward greater energy independence and sustainability for our Federation. Importantly, this milestone is the result of a rigorous, transparent, and internationally benchmarked process, ensuring a fair and competitive procurement that delivers maximum value for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
