SKELEC celebrates World Engineers Month

Basseterre, St. Kitts (26th March 2024)— The St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd. celebrated World Engineers Day with an insightful month of activities, demonstrating a deep appreciation for the invaluable contributions of engineers to St. Kitts and Nevis.

The activities commenced on March 4th, as SKELEC presented each of its engineers with a token of appreciation, acknowledging their exceptional efforts in driving progress and ensuring the reliability of electrical infrastructure. SKELEC, along with private engineers, embarked on a school tour on March 5th and March 7th. They visited four esteemed schools: St. Paul’s Primary School, Basseterre High School, Tucker Clarke Primary School, and Clarence Fitzroy Byrant College, Division of Technical Vocational Education & Management Studies. SKELEC engaged with students, inspiring them to pursue careers in the dynamic field of engineering, and provided monetary donations to all schools to strengthen their STEM programs.

On March 6th, SKELEC facilitated a radio panel discussion, bringing together engineering experts to explore the theme of World Engineers’ Day: “Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World.” The panel consisted of Mr. Kevin Bennett, Generation Manager at SKELEC; Ms. Anelda Date, Electrical Engineer at Global Engineering Consultancy Services; Dr. Cletus Bertin, Executive Director at CARILEC; and Lareine Gumbs, Engineer at the Public Works Department.

Additionally, on March 22nd 2024, engineers from across the company were tasked with an engineer’s challenge where the engineers were assigned teams, issued a prompt, and the opportunity to compete against each other.

Mr. Clement Williams, General Manager of SKELEC, expressed his pride in the company’s efforts to celebrate World Engineers Day and promote sustainable solutions, stating: “At SKELEC, we recognize the pivotal role that engineers play in shaping the future,” Williams said. “Through our diverse range of activities, we aim to inspire and empower the next generation of engineers and innovators, driving positive change and creating a more sustainable world.”
